Food List 2011

This year includes quite a few on the “things I’ve always wanted to do but have always pushed off” list, including perfecting my grandmother’s famous chocolate chip cookies and making something I see on a tv show (did people actually do that, before the internet was there to provide the recipes?).

Some items are on the list to help me get over my fears (did you know I’m terrified of cooking rice?) and some to built up that arsenal of everyday, lifelong recipes to whip out at a moment’s notice.

So here’s to 2011!

  1. Make sushi
  2. Make croissants from scratch
  3. Make rice 10 times
    (1) Basic white rice (no recipe)
    (2) Wild rice edamame salad
    (3) Saffron pilaf with raisins (no post)
    (4) Coconut brown rice (no post)
    (5) Coconut basmati rice

    2. This is a long process, but not too hard! I recommend rolling some citrus sugar/cinnamon in them.

      3. Because making rice terrifies me. I screw it up 90% of the time. Why? Who knows. It’s my culinary Archilles heel.
      6. I hadn’t picked a specific kind yet – my Gram makes an excellent chocolate with whipped cream, but also white cake with jam and whipped cream. So we’ll see …

      We could probably knock of a couple when we come visit you?

  2. I love this! You have inspired me to make a more solid list of my culinary goals for the year too. The only one I’ve specifically professed so far was to make croissants. I just got the huge tomb of a book ‘The Professional Pastry Chef’ by Bo Friberg if you want a serious recipe…well, not so serious, he just does everything by weight, which in the end I’m finding easier. And we’ve got all sorts of pickles going on over at my house (and other ferments like kombucha and ginger beer and sauerkraut and sour dough) . Let me know if you want to stop by when you’re in CO and we could knock a few off this list!
