Austria and Germany: The food, in pictures.

I told you there’d be more. But there’s not much to this one – just the important stuff.

This accounts for about half of our meals, and definitely the more delicious ones. You’ll notice some patterns – meat, meat, potatoes, meat, meat, beer, bread, more beer, wine.  By the end of the trip I had literally written in my notes “my life for a vegetable,” and was ordering side salads at almost every meal – so don’t go thinking I’d normally choose this pattern of food. But there were so many things to try, and so many things to try again …

Have questions about what anything is or how it was likely one of the best things I’ve ever eaten? Feel free to leave a comment and I’ll let you know!

Austria and Germany: Gemütlichkeit. And beer.

I have so much to say about our trip to Austria and Germany that I’m not really sure where to begin. Which is funny, considering I spent time on the flight home jotting down my thoughts and outlining an extensive series of posts, each focusing on a different concept, food item, or experience we had. I’m sure I’ll still get out at least a couple of posts after this one, but even a few days out of the trip my thoughts are less specific, less of the sort of pinpointed memories you frantically try to hold onto, and more the sort that melt together into a general recollection that brings a smile to my face and makes my “work stress shoulders” relax a little.

Stuffed zucchini blossoms with mozzarella, basil, and cornmeal

I’m in Europe right now. Well, let’s hope to god that I’m in Europe right now, since due to internet magic I’m writing this before I go but it should be posting while I’m there, and I definitely should be there.

Let’s let that sink in for a minute. (The me being in Europe thing – I’m pretty sure we’re all way used to internet magic by now.)

Now that we’re all over the excitement of me being in Europe, lounging in heurigen and eating my weight in saurkraut on a daily basis, let’s move on to squash blossoms.

A bit of broccoli rabe detox, perhaps?

This is a pretty common occurrence in my life:

  1. Go out of town. See lots of people. Schedule every breakfast, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, dinner, and post-dinner drinks time. Eat out approximately six times per day.
  2. Pants get anxious.
  3. Don’t exercise nearly as much as at home.
  4. Pants give warning.
  5. Bring tons of food on return journey, because there were so many bakeries/restaurants/delis/grocery stores that couldn’t fit in ridiculous vacation schedule.
  6. Pants begin routine of punishment, particularly when in contact with a very small, hot airplane seat. Discomfort ensues.
  7. Get home. Experience separation anxiety from kitchen; bake at least three things in the first 36 hours.
  8. Pants stage a coup; jersey skirts and yoga pants triumph and reign over life for a week or so.

Throw a wedding weekend into that mix – full of celebratory meals and drinks with friends and some of the most amazing cake I’ve ever had – and things are even more out of control. So that’s why I came home craving foods in various shades of green and beverages in various states of not alcohol. (And by that I really mean one particular state of not alcohol, that being: 100% not alcohol.) Read more

Graham crackers, and tragedy

I woke up yesterday morning in a bad mood. On the wrong side of the bed, both figuratively and literally. With a pain in my neck that only got worse when I got out of bed.  In the middle of a bad dream, the only clear event of which I can remember was going to a wine tasting and getting locked all alone in the tasting room with no wine.

So it was not exactly the best time to try rolling out a very sticky dough and then conducting on it a somewhat exact and time-consuming process. It was worth it, considering how great these crackers turned out, but at the time I actually didn’t think they were going very well and the whole rolling out process made me very angry. So angry, in fact, that after I filled my two baking sheets I threw away the other 1/3 of the dough.

I threw it away. Read more
